Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Co-operative (UHPHC)
The Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Co-operative (UHPHC) is the flagship development of the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Land Trust and represents the largest Black-led co-operative housing project in Canada. Backed by $61.2 million in financing through CMHC’s Co-operative Housing Development Program, this transformative project will deliver 136 new, permanently affordable homes to our historic African Nova Scotian community. It stands as a national example of how grassroots, community-led models can reshape the housing landscape.
The co-operative includes a mix of housing styles designed to meet diverse needs and promote community living:
- Bungalows (2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1,076 sq. ft.) – 26 units
- Bungalows with Garage (2 or 3 bedroom, 1,500 sq. ft.) – 43 units
- Two-Story Townhomes (2 bedroom, 1.5-bath, 1,100 sq. ft.) – 67 units
This project would not have been possible without our partners, HarbourTown, CHF Canada, CMHC, and the Community Housing Management Network.
The Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Co-operative is more than housing; it is about scaling our CLT and reshaping our community’s future, creating a legacy of secure, affordable homes and collective ownership that will serve generations to come.
