“Little Pockwock” Acquisition and Pre-Development
Little Pockwock will represent a historic achievement in reclaiming community land for future generations. Spanning 68 acres across five parcels of historical significance, this site connects to Little Pockwock Lake and sits adjacent to our co-op housing project. UHPCLT applied to purchase the lands from the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables in June 2023 and in October 2024 received ministerial approval to begin site feasibility and pre-development planning.
Since then, we have advanced larger-scale community planning and completed key technical studies, including a topographic survey, Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, and geotechnical study, with Phase II ESA now underway. Guided by extensive community visioning, plans for the site include a mix of affordable housing, cultural and recreational spaces, and opportunities for local economic activity. This project is a transformative step in reclaiming historic lands, ensuring they remain in community hands, and shaping a sustainable future for Upper Hammonds Plains. The next steps will be to go from site plans through to permitting.
